Handel’s Messiah as exuberant, infectious, and compelling as an opera but with the Christmas story.

Switzerland’s Gli Angeli Genève, known for their redicency at Festival Oude Muziek and their successful recordings, gives this masterpiece an extra golden lining. The Messiah at Christmas is like the Matthäus at Easter – but more festive and exuberant. Handel dared, for a religious work, to do a lot with the Messiah: at tense moments it sounds really thrilling, and joyful is almost over the top, with the Hallelujah as its highlight. That and the comprehensible English lyrics make the Messiah as catchy and compelling as an opera.

Last chance: photo exhibition NEIGHBOURS

Visit NEIGHBOURS before, during, or after your concert at de Doelen. This photo exhibition in the Grote Zaal Foyer welcomes de Doelen’s neighbours from the Oude Westen neighborhood.

Café Marseille, pet store De Rimboe, and ice cream shop De Ijssalon set the scene for a lively area where residents of all ages and styles come together. Photographer Robin Utrecht and creative producer Mieke van der Linden shine a spotlight on this diversity with a series of portraits. Utrecht, known for his work during Lunchbreak concerts and royal state visits, shows in this series that ordinary people are anything but ordinary.
