Imagination is everything. Debussy had never seen the seabed, yet his *La mer* conjures up the underwater world in all its splendor. Ravel’s *La valse* transports you to a ballroom in old Vienna. Grieg’s Piano Concerto takes the cake: it dances like a Norwegian wedding guest and smells of the surf. Ravel loved it: ‘Apart from Debussy, there is no composer with whom I feel as closely connected as Grieg.’
