Enigma-Variaties

Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest

Edward Elgar and John Williams: two masters of film music.

In the Enigma Variations, Edward Elgar portrayed his dearest friends. Each of the fourteen movements – some playfully teasing, others deeply moving and passionate – is a portrait in its own right; together they form a magnificent ode to friendship. Film composers such as John Williams have often drawn inspiration from them when writing their musical character sketches, from E.T. and Indiana Jones to Luke and Darth Vader.
