This is the option whereby the cultural institution receives an part of the inheritance. The size of the bestowal depends on the total assets left behind. A cultural institution can only accept an inheritance from an estate if there are no negative conditions attached to it for the institution. The will dictates which part of the inheritance is intended for de Doelen.

Bequest means that a certain amount of money or property (such as a house or a valuable painting) is bequeathed to an institution. Specific bequests of property or goods can be added in the codicil, naming de Doelen an heir in the will. This must be recorded by a notary. We can help you find a suitable notary.

Because de Doelen is an ANBI (Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling), the fund does not owe any tax on the estate. This way the inheritance is entirely in favor of de Doelen.

Inheritance is done through a will. And, to make it easy for yourself, you can follow the step-by-step plan below.

step 1: heir or legatee?

First choose whether you appoint a cultural institution as a (co-) legatee or as a (co-)heir. This depends on your own preference.

step 2: choose an executor?

Although it is not mandatory, it is wise to name an executor in your will. This can be someone close to you, but also the notary or a cultural institution. The executor settles your estate. Always ask the executor in advance whether he can and wants to perform these tasks.

step 3: record your wishes

Always have your wishes recorded by a notary. An own handwritten statement is not sufficient. You can have a will drawn up by a notary or you can do it online yourself.

During the first meeting you tell the notary what your wishes are. The notary will inform you about the options and the costs. The notary draws up your will.

You can also fill out an online form instead of an initial meeting with the notary. You must sign this at the notary. See step 5.

step 4: design text

After making an inventory of your wishes, the notary will draw up a draft text. You will receive this together with an explanation by post or e-mail. Please read this carefully.

step 5: sign

Make a (follow-up) appointment with your notary to discuss the text thoroughly. You can always make changes. When everything is to your liking, you sign the will. Once you have signed the will, you will receive a copy. The notary keeps the original and registers the will at the Central Will Register in The Hague. This way the will can always be found after your death. You can have your will amended by the notary at any time.

step 6: inform the cultural institution

If you want to do that yourself, let the cultural institution know that you have included them in your will. The institution can then involve you in their activities or invite you to events.
