DoelenEnsemble is committed to performing music that is rarely heard. At the centre of this programme is Buddha by Julius Eastman, a composition from 1984 and one of his later works. The piece belongs to a series in which Eastman uses open notation and flexible parameters. Within clearly defined boundaries, the musicians collectively determine how the music unfolds. Seated in a circle and performing without a conductor, they shape the performance through mutual attentiveness and direct interaction.
The programme also features Palimpsest by Simeon ten Holt. Based on the same principles at each performance but resulting in a different outcome every time, the music unfolds from quiet, contemplative passages into richly layered sound fields. The result is an immersive listening experience in which time and repetition play a central role.
