Classical Summers

Summer has played a special role in classical music for centuries. For many composers, it was a season that offered the time and space to write new music. Whether at a summer retreat or during long walks in nature, they found the focus and inspiration to create new works.

Gustav Mahler is perhaps the best-known example. Throughout the concert season, he spent months on the conductor’s podium, only to retreat each summer to small composing huts in the Alps. There, far from the bustle of musical life, he worked on large parts of his symphonies. For many composers, summer provided the opportunity to sketch, develop, and complete new music. It became a season in which inspiration and creativity flourished.

Summer is also the perfect time to look ahead. As De Doelen prepares for a new season, you can take your time exploring the concert series and performances you’ll want to experience in the months ahead. Be inspired by the new season and discover the concerts and series that are right for you.

Mahler's summer rowing trip

Mahler’s Seventh Symphony took a decisive turn during the summer of 1905. A year earlier, he had already composed the two mysterious Nachtmusik movements, but the opening movement continued to elude him. According to Mahler, the breakthrough came during a rowing trip on Lake Wörthersee, when the rhythm and character of the opening suddenly became clear to him. Back at his composing hut in Maiernigg, he completed the symphony later that same summer.

On 7 May 2027, you can hear Mahler’s Seventh Symphony at de Doelen, conducted by Lorenzo Viotti. Book the full International Orchestras series and enjoy an entire season of symphonic highlights.

Grieg’s Norwegian Summer

The Norwegian summers around Troldhaugen were a source of peace and inspiration for Edvard Grieg. In his composer’s cottage, overlooking the fjord, he created a significant part of his piano music. His intimate, poetic style captures the atmosphere of the Norwegian landscape and belongs among the finest music ever written for the piano.

Next season, star pianist Mikhail Pletnev will perform works by Grieg in the Great Hall of de Doelen as part of the Piano series. Mark 9 February 2027 in your calendar for a world-class recital. With the complete Piano series, you can experience a season of piano artistry at the highest level.
