Beethovens Pastorale

Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest

The pure essence of Webern and Beethoven’s all-encompassing bliss.

In the woods outside Vienna, Beethoven found the soothing tranquillity he so sorely missed in the city. It was there that he drew inspiration for the Pastoral, perhaps the most blissful of all his symphonies. Beethoven, in turn, was a great inspiration to Anton Webern. He too fled Vienna to catch his breath in the mountains. His symphony, small and delicate as a snowflake, is the resounding result of this.
