From October 17 to December 7, de Doelen Art will be hosting the exhibition Angisa Taki, a project by Tailors & Dragers. Five artists – Brian Coutinho, Noa Mac Donald, Lana Renfrum, Yanira Gefferie and Faisel Saro – are inspired by the angisa: a traditional Afro-Surinamese headdress that carries stories, sayings and history.
Tailors & Dragers focus on collecting, sharing and keeping alive Afro-Surinamese fashion heritage that connects the past and the present. Angisa Taki focuses on the meaningful tradition of naming and odo’s (sayings) – as a source of wisdom, identity and imagination.
Expect layered work full of symbolism, personal perspective and collective memory – an ode to the power of culture in image and form.
