With a big orchestra, an enormous choir, and four soloists, the Requiem of Verdi is so enormous and dramatic that it is just like an opera – the genre in which Verdi remains unsurpassed. With none other than Lorenzo Viotti as conductor, in his last season as chief of the NedPhO.

Verdi's Requiem contains many moments that, consciously or subconsciously, have become part of the universal soundtrack of life. And this is not surprising. Verdi used ALL his dramatic know-how to unite the comfort of mourning with the menace of death. The menacing climax, the Dies Irae, is so good that it is still often used in films.

The orchestra is so large that the Requiem is not often performed at such a high level as by Lorenzo Viotti, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Chorus of The National Opera. A unique opportunity to hear this monumental work in Viotti's last season as chief of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
