It was never Wagner’s intention for us to hear his Siegfried Idyll today. He wrote it as an intimate gift for his wife Cosima. Financial need later led him to publish the score, allowing this concert to open with twenty minutes of perfect tenderness. Mendelssohn’s piano concerto—also a musical love letter—and Schumann’s vibrant symphony complete the enchantment.
Zijn spel – zuiver, lyrisch en intelligent – getuigt van een ongebruikelijke volwassenheid.
