Johann Strauss meets the 20th century: tradition with a twist.

At the Vienna New Year’s Concert, Johann Strauss has something of a monopoly. But in Rotterdam, the ‘Waltz King’ faces stiff competition from a few 20th-century contemporaries. Lang surprises us with a Space Odyssey remix, Zimmermann takes us to the fairground, and Lachenmann sums up the entire history of German music in a madcap march. Strauss has the last word – but which Strauss?
