Few symphonies are as beloved as Mahler’s First, which evokes an entire world across four compelling movements, from dawn to a klezmer celebration. At its premiere, the music was still derided by the conservative audience; today we laugh at such a lack of understanding. But how many new sounds can we handle ourselves? Time to have our ears cleansed by a Mahler of our time: welcome Philippe Manoury.
