Melancholy: longing for something you have never experienced.

In the past, doctors and philosophers regarded this feeling as one of the four temperaments through which they sought to understand the human state of mind. Unlike the other temperaments, melancholy could never be explained by a physical cause. It remains elusive, and yet it is something everyone has experienced at some point.

In this concert, we move between the different temperaments – sanguine, phlegmatic and choleric – until everything comes together in melancholy. But don’t be alarmed: melancholy is more than a minor key. It inspires the creation of something beautiful, born from an awareness of transience and unfulfilled longing. Melancholy is a muse; the embodiment of longing itself.
