De Niemanders. Not just any band. They give a voice to the nobodies, the outcasts; people in difficult situations. Previously, De Niemanders recorded an album with inmates in Dutch prisons. On their latest album and in the accompanying live shows, they literally give asylum seekers a stage. The mesmerizing and rousing mix of male and female singers, musical styles, and many languages can now be heard for the first time in theaters with the show Cafe Habibi!
At festivals like Down The Rabbit Hole and Into The Great Wide Open, in pop venues, and even at the royal family’s grand King’s Day concert, the audience danced to a band with an irresistible groove. The many unique singers and musicians—some of whom live (or have lived) in asylum seeker centers—gave everyone goosebumps. In short: a band you have to see. It hits you right in the heart and gets your hips moving.
These underdogs are unstoppable and are now taking the next step. The 12-member musical family invites Dutch theater audiences into their self-created universe: Cafe Habibi. The band moves through the performance like a globe on legs: from Arabic floor-shakers to opera, and always with a generous dose of soul, gospel, and alternative rock. The cliché “music is a universal language” has probably never been more apt. As one reviewer aptly put it: “If we ever have to explain to aliens what music is and what it’s for, we know who to send: De Niemanders.”
