Beethoven and Strauss

Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orchestra

A delightful burst of joy.

Back to basics: that was the direction Richard Strauss took in his later years. After a life of Wagnerian excess, he composed a few more works that enchant with their perfect simplicity. Such as his Second Horn Concerto, written for the same orchestral lineup as Beethoven’s Seventh. Wagner called that symphony “a blissful outburst of joie de vivre”; Strauss’s horn concert is its understated counterpart.
