declaration of de Doelen of the cultural boycott of Israel
call for dialogue and connection
De Doelen is deeply affected by the violence in Gaza and Israel. The events of recent years have resulted in untold deaths and grief. We acknowledge the suffering of all victims and their families, regardless of origin, religion, or nationality.
A broad debate is underway in the cultural sector about how cultural institutions and artists should engage with this conflict, including calls for a cultural boycott. We understand the motivations of colleagues who want to make their voices heard through such a boycott and recognize the need to address injustice.
However, de Doelen has chosen not to participate in a boycott. This is not because we lack a sense of urgency to stop the suffering, but because we believe that in a polarizing world, culture must remain a voice of connection. Central to our impact objective is contributing to and creating connection in society. Music speaks to the heart and soul, and when presented with sincerity and integrity, it can be a powerful tool for understanding and connection.
We carefully consider every collaboration, with an eye for the integrity of the artists and companies. We distance ourselves from artists or institutions actively involved with regimes or organizations that violate values such as solidarity, equality, and human rights.
We call on everyone—artists, audiences, policymakers, and partners—to contribute to understanding and connection, and we strongly urge an immediate end to the violence and a renewed commitment to peace and justice.
De Doelen remains committed to a society in which art brings people together, transcends borders, and offers hope for a future in which everyone can live in safety and dignity.
