Luciano Berio was an extraordinary composer. His oeuvre consists mainly of experimental and electronic works, but in between there is one cycle that stands out from the rest: the Folk Songs. A wonderful cycle of folksongs from all over the world.

In 2025 Berio would have been 100 years old. To mark the occasion, the up-and-coming Canadian-Dutch soprano Elisabeth Hetherington and the DoelenEnsemble delve into his Folk Songs. They complement Berio's cycle with their selection of folksongs, for Berio himself was far from finished:

‘I have a utopian dream, though I know it cannot be realized: I would like to create a unity between folk music and our music – a real, perceptible, understandable conduit between ancient, popular music-making which is so close to everyday work and music.’ - Luciano Berio
