In Umva!, Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman transcends the boundaries between radio art and storytelling. Through headphones, she submerges you in a hybrid world of sound filled with instrumental and vocal music, sound effects, “Afrique concrète”, and abstract electronics.

The 112-year-old Kanoyni Ladislas, grandfather to Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman, is a legend and source of inspiration for Umva! During his long life as a traditional doctor and hunter, he saw how Rwanda was transformed by colonization, the battle for independence, genocides, and post-war bloodbaths into the fragile country that it is today.

Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman was born in Rwanda but grew up in Belgium. Fascinated by the narrative potential of abstract sound and music, Aurélie often adds dramatic and documentary elements to her compositions (or vice versa). Her oeuvre is multidisciplinary and balances between radio art, installation art, performance art, vocal art, and composition. She transforms and sculpts her wide collection of unique field recordings and soundscapes from East Africa into something she describes as “Afrique Concrète”.
