Bach’s cello suites evoke the feeling of coming home: the first notes of the first suite evoke a warm feeling of recognition and safety. However, for cellists, playing the Bach suites is akin to climbing the Mount Everest.

Rising star Ella van Poucke has chosen to play the odd suites (Bach wrote six in total). Taken together, the three suites have an almost meditative effect: the rhythms, the perfect harmonies, the peace, and the constant movement. But especially the fifth harbors its fair share of drama and tension.

Together with her brothers, Ella van Poucke is one of the Netherlands’ great talents. Her brother Nicolas will play a Schumann program for piano a few weeks earlier, together with Michael Wilmering. Her brother Timothy dances with the National Ballet.
