Each Vivaldi cantata is almost an opera in itself. Their pastoral lyrics and themes like love issues strongly contrast Vivaldi’s characteristic cheerfulness. In these cantatas, love is treacherous and cruel. Qual per ignoto calle is a dark journey into the caverns of the tormented heart. In other cantates, the lover begs for mercy, or forges revengeful plans. In recent years, Vivaldi’s cantatas experience a revival. The virtuosity of his opera’s and cantatas is not to be missed. Besides Vivaldi, gems by among others Monteverdi and Cavalli are to be performed.
