A DIY-kit to build dream islands, wouldn’t that be practical in times when the world might perish? Composer Richard Ayres offers a solution in Islands: a spectacular virtual atlas of places you can safely visit at all times. Together with artists from various disciplines, Ayres maps out the culture and nature of this dream islands. Welcome on board for a planet friendly, stimulating world trip.

As a child who grew up near the Atlantic coast, Ayres sailed the seven seas for night, using his bed as a boat. A special book recently activated this childhood memory: Atlas of Remote Islands by Judith Schalansky. Ayres composed these imaginary Islands for small ensemble and constantly changing forms of presentation, like videoclips, audio-recording and live concert.

Islands was realised with the support of Fonds Podiumkunsten.

‘Eén van de meest eigenzinnige en originele componisten van dit moment. Het enige voorspelbare aan zijn premières is dat ze onvoorspelbaar zijn’. – The Times (2020) over Richard Ayres
