For over ten years, Amsterdam Sinfonietta has a close connection with composer Michel van der Aa. Van der Aa is a specialist in multimedia operas, in which film en reality intertwine, sometimes even literally, for example with the help of 3D-glasses.
In The Book of Water, based on Max Frisch’ novella Man in the Holocene, it’s constantly raining. Protagonist Geiser gets more and more isolated because of the ongoing rain and floodings. Not only do his surroundings collaps under the rainstorms, his memory also crumbles. In Van der Aa’s newest musical theatre production for actor, string quartet and film, all boundaries are transgressed again.
