Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire 

Patricia Kopatchinskaja is a perform who elevates versatility to a higher level – why restrict yourself to ‘just’ being a star violinist? “All my life I have felt that I was Pierrot. Every time I played this piece on the violin when I was a student, I would say the words in my head.” And thus Koptachinskaja became an actress, for she takes on the role of narrator in Pierrot Lunaire. And this is while Schönberg’s melodrama is very demanding for the voice. He developed a new, cabaret-like voice technique for the narrator, somewhere between speaking and singing. Kopatchinskaja adds a theatrical edge to the performance.
