Multi-talent Barbara Hannigan masters almost every aspect of this concert. Not only does she conduct the London Symphony Orchestra, she also sings the solo in the last movement of Mahler’s Symphony no. 4. A veritable tour the force like only Hannigan can do, starting with Messiaen’s l’Ascension. Messiaen described his composition as ‘four meditations’ – although not soothing, repeating patterns, but rather a reflection on the majestic, increasingly intense religious experience.
