This is the first time conductor Anja Bihlmaier stars in de Doelen. She brings with her: her own Residentie Orkest, South Korean piano virtuoso Yeol Eum Son and... two Ravel compositions? Two times Ravel? Yes indeed, because it is Ravel’s orchestration which made Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition famous. By combining this with his Piano Concerto, Bihlmaier links two extremes of Ravel’s oeuvre under one common denominator: an immense feeling for timbre. Whether it is in the jazzy sounds of the Piano Concerto or the monumental brass sections and impending double basses in Pictures at an Exhibition: Ravel’s approach is grandiose and fiery, with blazing contrasts.
