Ravel said that La valse was simply an ode to Viennese three-four time. But his contemporaries, shortly after World War I, felt that the intense rhythms represented a grotesque commentary on current affairs. We can also speculate on the composer’s true intentions in the case of Schnittke – a master in the art of wrong-footing – and in Elgar’s glorious Enigma Variations. Will this concert give us the answers?
Tremendously sensitive, endearingly mischievous
