Celebrating a 100-year-old tradition

In 2022, the Netherlands Bach Society will be celebrating a 100-year-old tradition: the performance of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion at the Grote Kerk in Naarden. Shunske Sato has been playing with the Netherlands Bach Society for the past year, led by several famous guest conductors. In his fourth season as artistic director, Shunske will be the one leading Bach’s masterpiece, playing violin from the first chair. He’s a great supporter of this method, which was not unusual in Bach’s day.

The Saint Matthew Passion involves several groups entering into a conversation. Bach developed this idea musically by writing for two ensembles. As such, Shunske is looking to make optimal use of the hall’s acoustics: “In my set-up, the two ensembles stand in different spots; that helps bring out Bach’s stereo effect, and really adds a layer.”
