Who other than Julia Philippens could do Thomas Beijer’s Jazzvioolconcert justice? Improvising to jazz and classical music is like a second nature to the Fuse frontwoman. Thomas Beijer’s composition, performed by the North Netherlands Symphony unites both worlds – classical and jazz – in a unique manner.
Thomas Beijer on the Jazzvioolconcert: “I can’t think of any works where both of those things – improvisation and composition – are combined in a way I personally find satisfactory. I’m talking a real combination, an actual fusion, not a piece of ‘classical music’ followed by an improvised violin solo. The one has to inevitably flow out of the other. A new sub-language will emerge. […] It’s going to have to be a work that makes a new, younger audience want to get up in their chairs. I think Julia’s just the person to make that happen.”
