The South-African singer-songwriter creates a unique blend of traditional music and contemporary vocals and guitar

Bongeziwe Mabandla merges traditional and contemporary musical influences, with inventive afro-folk, performed in his mother tongue (Xhosa), as a result. Mabandla burst onto the scene in 2013 with the release of his debut album Umilo. His follow-up record, Mangaliso, won a 2018 SAMA (South African Music Award).

Last year saw the release of his third album, iimini, meaning ‘days’, which features soul, jazz and urban influences, in addition to his trademark afro-folk. He has also listed Tracy Chapman, The Fugees, Bon Iver and Michael Kiwanuka as major influences.
