John Adams in four hands
Tue 12 Oct ’2120:15 - 22:10doors open 18:30Grote Zaal
A program about one of the most successful living composers, the American John Adams, who will be celebrating his 75th birthday in 2022. To celebrate this occasion, Ralph van Raat invited over English piano virtuoso Joanna MacGregor to perform his complete works for two pianos, including, as John Adams himself suggested, the work Roll Over Beethoven, which has not been performed in the Netherlands before. The work is full of references to two of Beethoven’s later works, the Diabelli Variations and Piano Sonata No. 31.
Additionally, you will be hearing a new adaptation of what may well be Adams’ most well-known orchestra piece: the brilliant Short Ride in a Fast Machine, adapted for two grand pianos, as well as the exciting Hallelujah Junction.
The hypnotizing early minimalist solo composition Phrygian Gates, performed by Van Raat, whose award-winning recording of the work for Naxos can be heard in the movie Call Me By Your Name, concludes the conert.
