At the start of the 2020s, the echoes of a century ago are becoming more and more prominent. Just like 100 years ago, we can see some major shifts occur: we’re organizing world-wide protests to fight for an inhabitable planet and equal treatment. As a result of capitalism and environmental disasters, waves of immigrants and refugees spread out across the globe. Furthermore, incredible technology is making life both simpler and more complex in ways we are unable to even imagine right now.
In Roaring Twenties, the Ragazza Quartet not only brings us back to the previous century, but also looks towards a potential future, balancing between suspense and hope, destruction and construction, seriousness and playfulness. In addition to Bartók’s String Quartet No. 3 and Erich Korngold’s String Quartet No. 2, the program will feature a new piece by composer Garth Knox, former alto violinist in the renowned Arditti Quartet.
The quartet will be performing in a set made up of photos selected by designer Felipe Gonzales Cabezas, with whom they have collaborated before. Felipe selected old and new photographs and juxtaposed them to show off notable similarities and differences, and sometimes both. Dance, movement, protest and progress are some of the central themes, all of which are turning out to be more topical than we could have ever imagined when we started putting together this program.
