In Ester, the Nederlands Kamerkoor puts both ancient and contemporary power women centre stage. Source of inspiration is the Biblical figure Esther, an ancient icon of empowerment, who saved the Jewish people from genocide by taking matters into her own hands. The choir is conducted by the Slovenian conductor Martina Batič,blending together with the soundscapes made by the Iranian-American turntable artist Shiva Feshareki.
In this musical ode to courageous women through the ages, Shiva Feshareki’s hypnotizing electronic soundscapes are alternated with parts of the writingsby David Lang. This recently completed cycle of compositions was partly based on the Biblical book of Esther. These two frontrunners of empowerment are linked by the choreography featuring Niaya Jones a.k.a. BOSSLADY, an 18-year-old dancer, born and raised in the projects of South Central Los Angeles. This choreography was filmed by multi award-winning visual artist and filmmaker Miriam Kruishoop.
