Shining a light on Bach’s intriguing musical structure

The Art of Fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge) is a monument. Bach took a single musical theme and turned it into an hour-long work, that reverses, twists, amplifies and minimizes that same theme. The Netherlands Bach Society literally shines a light on the bizarre but intriguing musical structure with the help of lighting designer Folkert Uhde. The lighting and placement of the musicians tie in neatly with both the musical structure and the building’s architecture. Shunske Sato came up with his own instrumentation for The Art of Fugue for this production, which shows off just how versatile both the work and the Netherlands Bach Society are.
