Umbra is a group of young Icelandic women that performs medieval music from various European traditions, not least from their own: early Icelandic music. They’re accompanied on various instruments, amongst them the Baroque violin, double bass, Celtic harp, and percussion. The nature of the music remains unchanged, but the instrumentation gives it a contemporary touch.
Echoes from the Middle Ages
This series of concerts takes the listener on a time traveling journey to the earliest written music in Europe. Combining traditional performance, contemporary adaptations, and original compositions, three vocal ensembles aim to familiarize a whole new audience with these early works. Several lectures and workshops can be attended prior to the concerts.
